Record-Breaking Audition Numbers for ILYO 2026
A total of 551 applications have been submitted – making this year’s online auditions for the International Lutosławski Youth Orchestra the most successful in the project’s history. Never before have so many young instrumentalists from around the world applied to take part in ILYO.
The application process for the 14th edition of the International Lutosławski Youth Orchestra, the international youth orchestra of the Szczecin Philharmonic, officially closed on 30 April 2026 at 23:59. In total, 551 musicians from 57 countries across 6 continents submitted their applications.

These record-breaking numbers reflect the rapidly growing international recognition of the orchestra. They also confirm a broader trend: young musicians are actively seeking high-level opportunities to gain orchestral experience – and ILYO is increasingly seen as one of the key platforms to do so.

One of the most significant developments in recent years has been the project’s expanding global reach. While the International Lutosławski Youth Orchestra has always been open to musicians worldwide, it remains firmly rooted in Poland, with its home at the Szczecin Philharmonic. Historically, the majority of applicants came from Poland. However, this balance has shifted dramatically. In 2025, international applicants already accounted for 55% of all submissions. In 2026, this number has risen to nearly 68%, highlighting the orchestra’s truly global character.

Among instruments, the highest number of applications was recorded for violin, followed by flute and clarinet, with cello and percussion also ranking among the most competitive sections. Overall, the level of competition is exceptionally high this year, with an average of 6.7 candidates per position.

The results of the auditions will be announced on 15 May 2026 on the official ILYO website.
